In October 2012, the Belgium, art collector, Astrid Ullens de Schooten, opened the Foundation A Stichting (‘A’ stands for Astrid) in a renovated industrial building in Brussels. The Foundation’s aim is to show (socially engaged) photography and to increase knowledge and understanding of this art form in its broadest sense.

The Foundation, which mounts three exhibitions a year, is located on the site of the former Bata shoe factories, now a contemporary complex which houses shops, offices and living quarters.

This area is at the heart of a number of cultural initiatives and the neighbourhood plays an important role in the Foundation’s work. In particular, with visits to exhibitions by local school children and other activities which encourage young people to become involved. The Foundation’s President, Astrid Ullens de Schooten sees the Foundation’s role as key in exploring the fundamental questions which photography poses, as well as its social impact.

This is a small Foundation, which mounts important exhibitions of the work of artists, such as Diane Arbus, Walker Evans, Garry Winogrand, Harry Callahan, Friedlander and which is also engaged in significant exchanges with photographic institutions internationally.

In October 2012, the Fondation A Stichting opened its doors in south Brussels on the site of the former Bata factories. Created upon the initiative of Astrid Ullens de Schooten, and recognized as a promoting the public interest, it has a vocation to support the creation, knowledge, and preservation of the photographic image.
