The Hortensia Herrero Foundation was established in 2012 by Hortensia Herrero, vice-president and together with her husband majority shareholder of Mercadona, Spain’s biggest supermarket chain. The mission of the foundation is to foster interest, knowledge and awareness of art and culture through projects created in The Valencian Autonomous Community by artists from around the world.

The Foundation inaugurates the Hortensia Herrero Art Centre (CAHH) in November 2023 with the aim of sharing the best international contemporary art with society, and also helping to turn the Valencia into a top cultural and artistic destination. Some artists include in CAHH’s private collection are Andreas Gursky, Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz, and Anish Kapoor.

The Hortensia Herrero Art Centre is located in Valeriola Palace, an iconic 17th-century building in the Baroque Style, in Valencia’s Old Town. Restored mindful of its architectural heritage, the palace together with a newly built annex, offers more than 3,500 square metres of exhibition space spread over 17 individual exhibition rooms.

The Hortensia Herrero Foundation articulates its work around three areas: heritage restoration, dance and contemporary art. Key projects undertaken by the Foundation include: the restoration of Valencia’s College of High Silk Art and the Iglesia de San Nicolás (Saint Nicholas Church) — the so-called ‘Valencian Sistine Chapel’; various temporary exhibitions of monumental sculptures in Valencia; support for dance through Gala Valencia Danza Somos Arte (dance festival) or the Valencia International Dance Campus.
