Founded in 2018 by entrepreneur and art patron Saša Marčeta, the Foundation has established itself as a significant platform within the contemporary cultural landscape of Serbia, operating at the intersection of artistic production, public engagement, and institutional experimentation. Grounded in the belief that culture and contemporary art play a vital role in shaping an open, creative, and socially engaged society, the Foundation supports artists, curators, researchers, and cultural professionals through a range of initiatives that foster independent artistic practice and international exchange. Through this sustained commitment, Saša Marčeta has helped create a framework in which contemporary art can develop, engage diverse audiences, and gain broader international visibility.

Significance is attached to Bioskop Balkan (1876), a protected cultural heritage site in the historic center of Belgrade. Built on the foundations of a former caravanserai (han), the building reflects multiple layers of the city’s urban and cultural history. For decades, Bioskop Balkan was among Belgrade’s most beloved cinemas, a place where generations of audiences encountered both popular and arthouse film culture. Today, through the activities of the Saša Marčeta Foundation, the building has been reactivated as a contemporary cultural hub while preserving its historical identity and collective memory. In this way, the Foundation not only supports contemporary artistic production but also reinvigorates an important architectural landmark, creating a dialogue between Belgrade’s cultural heritage and its evolving contemporary art scene.
